The Iris receives enthusiastic praise for its appearance. Blackburn began work on the very large long-range reconnaissance flying boat in 1924. Experience with oversized aircraft structures from the Cubaroo biplane informed the project. Major J. D. Rennie designed the Iris to Air Ministry Specification R.14/24.
