Why more battleships would not solve Vietnam

A naval-gunfire answer separates the ability to destroy targets from the political and operational plan needed to exploit that destruction.

Question

Should the United States have kept New Jersey active and reactivated her sisters for Vietnam?

Short answer

Additional battleships could deliver enormous firepower, but without a ground offensive into North Vietnam the strategic purpose of sustained bombardment remains unclear.

Notes

The North Vietnamese had little direct answer to New Jersey's heavy guns, making more Iowa-class ships tactically attractive. Additional battleships could deliver more heavy fire along the coast. Their effect would still depend on the political and operational purpose assigned to the bombardment. Repeated high-explosive fire cannot create a decisive result when policy does not permit the ground campaign needed to exploit it.
