The qualitative naval race ran through international suppliers

British, American, Italian, Japanese, and even German warship development drew on shared turbine firms and components, complicating the idea of isolated national races.

Notes

The international qualitative competition depended on overlapping national industries. Parsons and Brown-Curtis turbine designs moved through Italian and Japanese construction, while Brown improved the American Curtis system into a stronger British variant. New warships could combine British machinery, Italian guns, and American sights, allowing each launch to justify another response from states that had supplied part of it. Even German fast ships depended partly on British turbine supply because domestic production capacity was insufficient.
