Why Inflexible-class ships differed between yards

Two design pairs and differing hull measurements show how builders interpreted Slade's common plans.

Notes

The Inflexible class fell into two design pairs: Inflexible with Africa, and Dictator with Sceptre. The listed standard hull measured 159 feet along the gun deck and 44 feet 4 inches in beam. Tonnage ranged from roughly 1,388 to 1,420 tons burthen. Africa's recorded dimensions differed in length, beam, and depth of hold, so the class figures do not describe every ship exactly. Thomas Slade produced the design, then the builder took responsibility for interpreting and constructing it. Yard officers oversaw individual parts of the work. Construction at different yards allowed small differences to develop within a shared design.
