Imperatritsa Mariya could have constrained Goeben sooner

The Black Sea dreadnoughts paired theater-specific size and protection with enough firepower to complicate Goeben's operations.

Notes

The Imperatritsa Mariya class was a compact Black Sea design whose wartime careers were cut short by explosion, revolution, scuttling, and civil war. Had the ships entered service earlier, their twelve-inch batteries and protection could have forced the battlecruiser Goeben to operate much more cautiously. Goeben retained a speed advantage, but Ottoman fuel and maintenance conditions limited how freely that advantage could be used. The case shows why a slower regional battleship could still exert strategic control without needing to catch its opponent in a decisive chase.
