Hood, Vanguard, and a Falklands counterfactual

A modernized Hood is tested against refit economics, service life, symbolism, and the actual needs of the Falklands campaign.

Question

If HMS Hood survived and was modernized, what effect could she have had in the Falklands War?

Short answer

A surviving Hood might have absorbed resources intended for Vanguard and become a powerful symbol, but neither ship was likely to remain in service until 1982.

Notes

A Hood that survived the Second World War would probably have required a major modernization. Reusing material intended for Vanguard could have returned the famous ship to service faster than completing a new battleship. The result would have been powerful and politically symbolic, but that does not make survival to 1982 likely. Even cruisers had disappeared from Royal Navy service by then. The more consequential missing capability in the Falklands was a fleet carrier with airborne early warning aircraft, rather than a large gunship.
