Vanguard and Hood reveal the limits of capital-ship turbine power

The discussion separates the power a turbine plant could provide from the Admiralty's practical choice of which capital ships to build or reconstruct.

Notes

HMS Vanguard historically made about 123,000 shaft horsepower with four steam-turbine sets and eight boilers. Mature modules in the accelerated program could raise that figure toward 160,000-180,000 shaft horsepower while reducing machinery weight. HMS Hood's twenty-four boilers make her an even larger theoretical reconstruction prize, with several thousand tons potentially available for protection, subdivision, or power. Repulse remains the more likely early project because she would be cheaper to modernize and useful as a fast carrier escort. Turbine capability therefore expands the design space without eliminating cost, dockyard time, and fleet-priority choices.
