British shipyards and specialised industrial knowledge

The different strengths associated with Denny, John Brown, Yarrow, and Thornycroft explain why yard closures cost Britain specialised knowledge as well as building capacity.

Notes

British yards accumulated different engineering strengths through repeated shipbuilding work. Denny was associated with solid destroyers, while Yarrow and Thornycroft had reputations for speed. Cammell Laird provided an example of innovative engineering. John Brown was known for high-performance machinery, including its Brown-Curtis turbines. Curtis supplied the turbine design, and John Brown produced a version with better performance. The loss of yards reduced both construction capacity and the specialised knowledge behind such improvements.
