How HMS Victoria's armored slipper could fight

Victoria combined very heavy protection and a powerful secondary battery with two enormous but slow-firing main guns.

Question

How effective would HMS Victoria, the so-called armored slipper, have been in combat?

Short answer

Quite effective: she was exceptionally well protected and heavily armed, though her largest guns fired slowly and her low bow was likely wet.

Notes

The low-freeboard ironclad is judged more combat-capable than its appearance suggests. Twelve 6-inch guns supplied the kind of rapid medium-caliber fire that was often decisive in its period, while an 18-inch belt and 16-inch bulkheads made the armored core extremely solid. Her two 16.25-inch guns fired slowly, but a hit from either could cause severe damage. The principal practical weakness raised here is a wet forward deck rather than a lack of fighting power.
