How HMS Valiant became a modernized Queen Elizabeth-class battleship

Valiant's machinery, armor, radar, fire control, and heavy anti-aircraft refit show what modernization could extract from a First World War hull.

Notes

Unlike the slower Revenge class, Valiant was an extensively rebuilt Queen Elizabeth-class veteran of Jutland. Her 1937-39 reconstruction replaced boilers and turbines, strengthened protection, and modernized high-angle and surface fire control. Radar supported a 15-inch main battery, dual-purpose 4.5-inch guns, and a heavy fit of pom-poms, 20 mm cannon, and machine guns. Torpedo bulges and extra magazine protection affected weight and machinery alongside the new weapons. Her rising displacement records the cumulative cost of reconstruction and the abandonment of interwar treaty limits once war began.
