HMS Unicorn was a forward aviation-support ship rather than simply another aircraft carrier. That distinction helped justify a vessel built around repair, maintenance, stores, and the needs of an embarked air arm. Unicorn entered service at a critical wartime moment and helped sustain the light-fleet carriers as an operational system rather than as isolated flight decks. The support concept also mattered to the navies that later operated British-designed light carriers. Unicorn was therefore central to Reginald Henderson's design legacy and became a foundation for postwar Commonwealth naval aviation.
