The Navy considered the Revenge name important enough to rename an older battleship so the new class leader could carry it. The name reached back to the 1577 warship that fought the Spanish Armada, giving the new hull a conspicuous place in Royal Navy tradition. Built by Vickers at Barrow-in-Furness, the ship cost more than £2.4 million in prewar money and commissioned in February 1916. That timing sent a newly worked-up battleship into the Grand Fleet only months before Jutland.
