While cruising south of the Suez Canal in October 1956, Newfoundland ordered the Egyptian frigate Domiat to heave to. Domiat refused and opened fire, causing damage and casualties aboard the much larger cruiser. Newfoundland and the Daring-class destroyer HMS Diana returned fire and sank the former River-class frigate. They rescued sixty-nine survivors from the wreckage. One Newfoundland sailor was killed and five were wounded, a human cost that the unequal size of the two ships can easily obscure.
