Chapter · 2:57:48-3:08:27

Nelson as a scarce heavy striking force

Nelson's flagship role, mine damage, and wartime deployments show how the Royal Navy managed one of only two 16-inch battleships.

Notes

Nelson served for years as Atlantic and Home Fleet flagship, but her 1939 magnetic-mine damage opened the hull forward of A turret and kept her under repair until August 1940. Once back in service she and Rodney guarded against invasion and covered likely breakout routes for German surface raiders. She later joined convoy work, the wider Bismarck pursuit, Force H, and Mediterranean operations under James Somerville. A refit in Philadelphia preceded her transfer to the Eastern Fleet, where she became fleet flagship and supported the return of British authority after Japan's surrender. The narrative emphasizes the operational caution created by having only two ships with this level of gunpower and the broad employment possible once Nelson ceased carrying the fleet commander.
