HMS Lively's short, active Mediterranean career

The recently commissioned destroyer HMS Lively illustrates how a modern escort could move rapidly from capital-ship protection to Force K and be lost within a year.

Notes

HMS Lively had been laid down before the war but was not commissioned until July 1941, only months before the Duisburg convoy action. Built by Cammell Laird, she joined the 4th Destroyer Flotilla at Gibraltar and helped escort capital ships including Ark Royal, Nelson, Rodney, and Prince of Wales. Her service then centered on the Mediterranean, where she supported Agnew's cruiser force despite never being his personal command. Lively was sunk by air attack in May 1942, making her brief career a compact example of the operational tempo and attrition faced by modern Royal Navy destroyers in the theater.
