Why historical claims need evidence

A claimed wreck discovery prompts a practical explanation of how historians weigh new assertions against archival evidence.

Question

What should we make of a website claiming to have discovered a wreck without publishing images or sonar scans?

Short answer

Ask for the evidence; a claim cannot displace archival documentation until comparable supporting material is available.

Notes

A new claim can overturn an official account, but only when it brings evidence that others can assess. An Admiralty report or other archival record is not infallible, yet it provides a documented account against which the new claim must compete. A historian cannot responsibly replace that material with an unsupported assertion or accept a demand to prove someone else's case for them. The practical rule is to revise the history when comparable evidence warrants revision, rather than when a confident alternative merely appears.
