A heavy radar mounted high in a ship changes its balance and stability demands. The Hunter programme illustrates the difficulties introduced by a capable but heavy radar. Earlier British destroyer designs allowed for hull enlargement, but the longer Batch 3 Type 42s were built in that form rather than cut apart after completion. Their hull shape also required reworking. A larger air-defence derivative therefore needs structural and hydrodynamic redesign beyond inserting a straight section.

Heavy radar and the Type 42 stretch show how hull changes spread
Hunter's radar topweight and the reshaped Batch 3 Type 42 hull illustrate why a stretch affects more than length.
