Halo's Marathon class as a scale comparison

The similarly named Halo cruiser provides a science-fiction comparison for the radically different scale hidden behind one class name.

Notes

Searches for the historical Marathon class often surface Halo's much larger Marathon-class heavy cruiser, which turns the shared name into a useful scale comparison. The fictional ship is described as 1,192 metres long and about 12 million tons, beside roughly 2,950 tons for the Victorian protected cruiser. Rounding the historical ship to 3,000 tons puts the fictional vessel at about 4,000 times its displacement. One class name therefore covers ships built on radically different technological and organizational scales. The comparison also keeps the real protected cruisers distinct from Halo's fictional class before their fleet roles are considered.
