Why early missile cruisers need system-by-system analysis

Early missile cruisers cannot be understood as interchangeable gunships because their sensors, upgrades, and assigned targets changed their real effectiveness.

Notes

Missile systems transformed ships in ways a simple hull or class label cannot capture. Radar, missile type, fire-control arrangements, upgrades, and assigned targets all affected what a cruiser could actually do in service. Two visually similar guided-missile ships might therefore have sharply different capabilities at different points in their careers. Discussion of postwar systems is kept to clearly public technical detail. Historical analysis can still explain development, employment, and change over time without publishing sensitive information.
