Could technology already available in Germany have made Graf Zeppelin operational much earlier?
Short answerGermany had relevant starting technologies, but naval versions still needed development, funding, and Luftwaffe cooperation.
NotesA land-based Lorenz blind-landing beam could not simply become a carrier landing system. Shipboard equipment had different size and installation requirements, and night flying needed more than a guidance beacon. The carrier's pneumatic catapult was itself a more developed version of the system used on mail ships, after years of work. Further development would compete with army spending and require the Luftwaffe and Hermann Goring to support naval aviation. A scenario placing Graf Zeppelin in service in 1939 therefore has to distinguish technology available then from equipment that still needed development. Giving Germany additional advances also allows British responses, including earlier carrier aircraft or different procurement choices.
