Graf Spee had operated long enough for hull fouling and the wear of an extended cruise to reduce its top speed, making a return through the blockade increasingly doubtful. Deutschland had escaped earlier, before British containment was fully established. Regular cruisers were now reinforced by armed merchant cruisers on patrol, multiplying the obstacles between Graf Spee and Germany. Hull condition and patrol density therefore constrained both continued raiding and any attempt to return home.

Hull fouling and a denser blockade narrow Graf Spee's options
Long deployment had reduced Graf Spee's speed just as cruisers and armed merchant cruisers made the route home more dangerous.
