Glatton and the danger of improper magazine insulation

Glatton's destruction shows how substituting newspaper for proper cork insulation could expose a monitor's ammunition to dangerous heating.

Notes

Gorgon and Glatton were ordered for the Norwegian Navy before the Royal Navy requisitioned them during the First World War. Glatton was destroyed after newspaper was used in place of cork insulation around her ammunition. The substitution allowed heat to reach explosives aboard a ship built around heavy guns and their magazines. Her loss shows how a cheap material substitution and poor workmanship could defeat a warship's magazine safety.
