Could Germany build more than two H-class battleships at a time and finish the programme by 1943-45?
Short answerEarlier capital ships suggest at least three and a half to four years per ship, with larger H-class vessels facing additional yard, labour, supply-chain and design constraints.
NotesScharnhorst took roughly three and a half years from laying down to commissioning, while Gneisenau took about three years. Bismarck took roughly four years and one month, and Tirpitz about four years and three months. Commissioning preceded completion of testing and readiness for combat. Tirpitz's schedule also included wartime disruption, which qualifies its use as a peacetime comparison. Even a generous estimate of three and a half years would place the H and J completions around 1943 and subsequent 1940 starts around 1944. Those estimates concern larger ships and depend on obtaining sufficient yard and industrial capacity while other capital-ship projects compete for it.
