Gangut: a Navarino veteran rebuilt for the steam age

The Russian Gangut’s career links a wooden ship of the line at Navarino with a later screw conversion and Baltic service.

Notes

Gangut fought at Navarino before the age of steam rates and then continued through repairs, Baltic cruises, and a screw conversion in the 1850s. She took 52 hits and suffered severe casualties in the 1827 battle before entering the new technological era. In 1848 Russia deployed her with the Baltic Fleet into Danish waters as a deterrent demonstration supporting Denmark’s integrity during the First Schleswig War. Her long career shows how conversion extended the utility of established wooden fighting ships. Gangut also places Russia within the multinational transition to steam.
