Battlecruiser designs changed as technology and naval requirements developed, so the unbuilt G3 differed sharply from Invincible. Its speed and armour support a case for calling it a fast battleship. Under a construction-based definition, however, G3 retained cruiser-style internal subdivision rather than the more extensive compartmentation associated with battleships. The more heavily armed and protected N3 provides the contemporary battleship comparison. In this interpretation, G3 continued the British requirement for a powerful cruising ship that could maintain a global presence.
