G3 and N3 designs fit imperial dockyards and treaty expectations

Deferred imperial dockyard upgrades forced postwar capital-ship studies to fit existing facilities while planners anticipated gun and displacement limits.

Notes

The Royal Navy had postponed successive rounds of infrastructure upgrades, so designers expected existing imperial dry docks to constrain the next decade of capital-ship construction. The G3 and N3 studies therefore balanced heavy guns and protection against the number of yards able to dock them. Reducing the G3's proposed gun calibre from 16.5 inches to 16 inches widened infrastructure compatibility and aligned with one possible treaty ceiling. Warship dimensions also had to fit the shore network able to build, repair, and sustain the fleet.
