Why a G3 made more sense as a carrier conversion than Hood

A G3 conversion offered more plausible carrier potential than rebuilding Hood, whose existing structure made conversion exceptionally disruptive.

Question

Would Hood or a G3 have made the better aircraft-carrier conversion?

Short answer

A G3 was the more plausible conversion candidate. Hood was too thoroughly built for conversion without dismantling much of the ship, while a G3 could be adapted earlier in construction.

Notes

Turning Hood into a carrier would mean effectively unbuilding a completed and solidly constructed ship. The unfinished G3s were more plausible candidates because their internal arrangements could still be altered during construction. Compared with the Courageous-class conversions, a G3-derived carrier would have a longer hull and different proportions. Those proportions would probably place the island farther aft and produce a distinct flight-deck layout.
