Gascogne as the bridge to Alsace

The proposed Gascogne arrangement shows the route from treaty-shaped Dunkerque and Richelieu designs toward the more ambitious Alsace class.

Notes

The video treats Gascogne as a revealing intermediate design rather than a simple dead end. Moving one quadruple turret aft gained rearward coverage, but it also lost the strong forward-fire concentration that made the earlier French layout attractive. A distributed battery could use its full strength only on the broadside, exposing more of the ship to an opponent. Alsace began from this debate over how much to preserve or redistribute the main battery.
