French losses shifted capital-ship strength toward the Bretagne class

The loss ledger combines heavy Dardanelles and Adriatic attrition with the commissioning of three Bretagne-class dreadnoughts during the war.

Notes

French losses are totaled as three pre-dreadnoughts, one semi-dreadnought, four armored cruisers, one protected cruiser, twelve destroyers, and fourteen submarines. The Dardanelles and Adriatic campaigns account for much of that damage, while captured submarines added the humiliation of French-built boats serving Austria-Hungary. Against those losses, France brought three Bretagne-class dreadnoughts into service. The replacement exchange was not one-for-one: older capital ships disappeared while a smaller number of more modern dreadnoughts entered the fleet.
