French constructors inside British dockyards

Britain recruited French naval constructors for design knowledge and for the practical work of repairing captured French warships.

Notes

The Royal Navy did not merely wait for displaced French expertise to arrive; it actively sought naval constructors. These specialists explained how French ships had been designed and built while remaining under British constructor leadership. Their knowledge helped inform the new generation of British warships emerging in the 1790s. It was also immediately useful when captured French hulls entered British yards. Having people familiar with those designs on staff shortened the path from prize capture to an operational ship in Royal Navy service.
