Why industrial sovereignty shaped French naval procurement

France accepted older or licensed aircraft when necessary while directing procurement toward an industrial base that could expand for national security.

Notes

Independent action required more than French-flagged ships and aircraft. France wanted a defence-industrial base that remained viable enough to expand when national security required it, even when a program was not the cheapest commercial choice. Partners could misunderstand contracts when they overlooked this industrial objective. Rebuilding that capacity took time, so French naval aviation retained aircraft such as the F4U Corsair for a long period and sometimes adopted licensed foreign designs. These compromises accompanied intensive employment in Indochina, Suez, and other operations while national industry recovered.
