Could the Royal Navy use the FREMM program to obtain more escorts?
Short answerIt could, but building more Type 26, Type 31, or Type 83 ships would avoid duplicating roles and support systems.
NotesBritain's Type 26 and Type 31 programs already address the frigate requirements raised here, while Type 83 is intended for area air defense. Adopting FREMM would still require British construction capacity. A further class would also introduce another training cycle and set of logistical arrangements. If the aim is more hulls, ordering more of the existing designs is preferred because it avoids adding those support burdens. The American Constellation program is identified as a modified FREMM design.
