Coast Guard deployments serve both defense readiness and law enforcement, with fisheries enforcement especially important in remote waters. Vulnerable areas include the Bering Sea, Hawaii, outlying US territories, and the Gulf of Mexico, and helping smaller partners protect their stocks also protects American interests. Large Chinese fishing fleets can deplete the waters of smaller Pacific states, pushing local fishers toward longer and riskier voyages. Maintaining fish stocks closer to home reduces those risks and helps limit pressure on neighbouring waters.
