Why the Royal Navy did not put floatplanes on sloops

The Navy considered sloop-borne floatplanes but could obtain aviation support from carriers and cruisers after learning from First World War monitor experiments.

Question

Did the Royal Navy experiment with putting one or two floatplanes on a sloop?

Short answer

It considered the idea, but carriers and cruisers already carried aircraft, and monitor experiments had shown the tradeoffs of operating them from smaller ships.

Notes

The Royal Navy considered putting a floatplane on a sloop but did not pursue the idea. Carriers, cruisers, and other aircraft-capable ships already supplied aviation support to the fleet. First World War experiments with floatplanes and seaplanes aboard monitors had also provided experience of the tradeoffs on smaller hulls. A sloop could therefore preserve its limited space for escort duties while relying on larger ships for aircraft. The rejected fit was a fleet-level allocation choice rather than ignorance of the technology.
