A carrier may need repair far from its home dockyard, so planners must assess overseas commercial facilities as well as domestic yards. Singapore and floating dry docks illustrate ways to extend repair access. A proposed floating dock accompanying the Queen Elizabeth-class programme would have given Britain another repair option. France's single large carrier also raises the risk of depending on one available yard. Dock dimensions alone do not establish repair capability: the Penzance example has industrial buildings occupying roughly four or five times the dock's area, even though it serves merchant shipping.
