Simpler construction can support quality and maintenance

The Fletcher and Essex examples connect repeatable construction with easier maintenance, fewer specialized parts, and large production runs.

Notes

The Fletcher program used a design that could be repeated in large numbers. The Essex approach treated the Yorktown design as a basis for a carrier suited to rapid, repeated construction. Mass production requires reducing the complexity of the build, and that can support consistent quality. Simpler equipment can be easier to maintain at fighting standard. More complex arrangements demand additional maintenance hours, specialized parts, and logistical support. The benefit depends on organizing production well, rather than assuming that quantity alone guarantees a good ship.
