Viking and Gannet extend anti-submarine patrols beyond helicopters

Faster fixed-wing aircraft can search and harass submarines beyond helicopter patrol areas, preserving an outer layer of carrier anti-submarine defence.

Notes

The S-3 Viking and Fairey Gannet provided long-range anti-submarine capability from carriers, and the Viking's extended tail probe is identified as a magnetic anomaly detector. Faster fixed-wing aircraft could reach more distant patrol areas in a given time than helicopters. That outer layer could spot and harass submarines, drive them away and interfere with their concentration against a fleet. Helicopters complemented it by pursuing contacts and concentrating on attacks closer in. A larger helicopter force could theoretically cover both functions, but losing the fixed-wing aircraft sacrificed the advantage of their speed and reach.
