Chapter · 36:22-49:26

Building a 36-knot battlecruiser around its mission

A fast battlecruiser design exercise balances 36-knot speed, 12 15-inch guns, all-or-nothing protection, and stability.

Notes

The design starts with a high-speed requirement and then allocates displacement among machinery, armament, belt and deck protection, anti-flooding, and secondary batteries. Twelve 15-inch guns and a 36-knot target make firepower and mobility the defining requirements. The resulting battlecruiser relies on speed and a heavy battery to create tactical options. Its protection is substantial, though the trial treats a close-range exchange with a battleship as a misuse of the design. The build also shows how armour additions and weight distribution affect pitch, roll, and engine efficiency.
