The Falklands War as a test of Western doctrine against Western weapons

British forces prepared for Soviet systems but instead faced Argentine forces using Western training and weapons, exposing mismatched assumptions.

Notes

Argentina drew heavily on American-influenced training and fielded Western weapons, including Exocet missiles. Britain brought its own interpretation of NATO doctrine to the South Atlantic. Defensive systems and countermeasures had often been tested against presumed Soviet threats or friendly equivalents rather than the other side's different Western equipment. A follow-up gives the concrete example of infrared flares that defeated each side's own missiles but were less effective against the opponent's different seeker. The campaign exposed how a force optimized for one intelligence picture could be surprised by familiar technology used from an unexpected direction.
