The logistical deadline behind the end of the Falklands War

The British fleet faced a hard choice between Argentine surrender and an immediate assault on Stanley as ships, weapons, and weather reached their limits.

Question

Why did the Falklands War have to end when it did, one way or another?

Short answer

British logistics, depleted ships, approaching storms, and the need to rotate the carriers forced either Argentine surrender or an immediate final assault on Stanley.

Notes

A surface gun line was being assembled for the battle of Stanley while ships were running low on missiles, spares, and endurance after prolonged exposure to the South Atlantic. Reinforcements centred on Illustrious and Bristol were heading south, but their arrival would also release Hermes, Invincible, and worn escorts for the voyage home. Approaching winter weather made a coherent extension of the campaign increasingly difficult.
