A Falklands dock could have transformed South Atlantic maintenance

Local repair capacity would have kept cruisers on station and changed how Britain sustained ships across the South Atlantic.

Notes

A large dock once considered for the Falkland Islands could have changed South Atlantic operations. It could have repaired a ship such as Canopus and supported a larger local force instead of sending cruisers to Cape Town or Freetown for maintenance. Adequate British capacity on station might also have spared Southampton from seeking Brazilian facilities. A double-ended dock usable for dry repair or ordinary fitting-out would have altered both wartime availability and the islands' long-term naval importance.
