Production numbers confirmed the Fairey III's spotter role

The large production runs of the III D, III F, and later marks show how completely the family found its niche as a fleet spotter-reconnaissance aircraft.

Notes

Fairey initially discussed patrol and even fighter possibilities for the design, but the family achieved scale only after settling into spotter-reconnaissance work. The three principal variants under discussion reached production totals of 227, 291, and 243 aircraft. Together those runs account for roughly two-thirds of the broader Fairey III family total used in the comparison. The figures also reveal a procurement pattern: the Royal Navy and overseas customers repeatedly bought the versions aligned with observation and reconnaissance needs.
