Fairey III engines balanced power with overseas maintenance

Successive Fairey III engines show how Fairey balanced rising power against the difficulty of maintaining aircraft on distant naval stations.

Notes

The Fairey III family's changing engines reveal both rising power and the practical demands of global deployment. Early variants used Sunbeam Maori and Rolls-Royce Eagle engines, while later III Fs commonly received 450-horsepower Napier Lions and sometimes versions rated still higher. Fairey also experimented with a radial engine for Far East service because inline piston engines were proving difficult to maintain at long distance. The comparison shows that an engine choice affected deployability and support requirements as much as headline performance. For a fleet aviation system scattered across overseas stations, maintainability could determine how much nominal capability was actually available.
