Fairey survived the post-First World War contraction partly by developing aircraft before their operational roles had fully settled. Aircraft No. 10 supplied the basic form: a moderately large, single-engined, multi-seat machine adaptable as either a landplane or floatplane. That flexibility let the design answer several possible needs before the Royal Navy settled on its greatest value. The resulting Fairey III helped establish spotter-reconnaissance as a durable fleet aviation role rather than merely filling a pre-existing category.
