Why retain F-35B rather than split between F-35A and F-35C?
Short answerA common STOVL fleet is easier to sustain across carriers and amphibious ships, giving Britain more usable flight decks in a crisis.
NotesForce design has to measure availability and sustainment alongside the performance of a single aircraft. A common F-35B fleet is easier for Britain to maintain than separate land-based and carrier variants. Replacing Albion and Bulwark with amphibious ships able to operate the aircraft could create two additional flight decks alongside Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales. Those smaller decks would be less capable than a fleet carrier, but they could preserve limited air-defence or strike capability when one carrier is in refit and the other is damaged.
