F125 and the peacetime-frigate trap

Germany's F125 supports long peacetime deployments but lacks the layered air defence expected of a war-fighting frigate.

Notes

The ship has a useful 127 mm gun, anti-ship missiles, RAM launchers, and facilities for sustained deployments. The contrast with the Bremen class makes the missing wider defensive layer especially visible. Its weakness is that RAM is a close-in anti-missile system rather than broad point or area defence. The design therefore suits a world of persistent low-threat presence better than one demanding a balanced escort in major war. In the confined Baltic, a ship must either be heavily defended enough to survive dense threats or small and agile enough to avoid them, and F125 fits neither extreme comfortably.
