SCB-27A adapted Essex carriers for heavier jet aircraft

Catapults, deck alterations, fuel storage and stability changes supported the Essex class's transition to jet operations.

Notes

Jet aircraft created new demands for carriers built during the Second World War. SCB-27A fitted more powerful H8 hydraulic catapults and blast deflectors, strengthened sections of flight deck and removed the twin 5-inch gun turrets from the flight deck. A new island incorporated the smoke stack, while additional aviation-fuel storage and handling changes supported the new aircraft. Hull bulges restored stability and increased the waterline beam to 101 feet. Nine ships received these changes between 1948 and 1953, including Oriskany, which was completed in 1950.
