Esmeralda and the gradual transition to modern warships

Use Esmeralda to see how celebrated naval design revolutions grew out of years of experimentation.

Notes

Esmeralda had a successful career, but her status as the first protected cruiser does not mean every predecessor was obsolete. Designers spent decades feeling toward workable combinations of steam propulsion, armour, weapons, and hull form by building real ships without modern simulation tools. The same gradual process produced semi-dreadnoughts before HMS Dreadnought rather than a clean break between failed and modern designs. This interpretation treats the late nineteenth century as roughly a half-century of transition followed by a period in which established warship forms were refined.
