Esmeralda's machinery, dimensions, range, and crew

Review the roughly 3,000-ton cruiser's twin-shaft machinery, coal limits, compact hull, and 296-person complement.

Notes

Esmeralda displaced about 2,950 long tons and used four double-ended fire-tube boilers feeding two compound engines and two shafts. Roughly 6,800 indicated horsepower produced 18.3 knots, while a maximum coal load of about 600 tons constrained endurance. Her 275-foot hull drew about 18 feet 6 inches and carried a complement of 296. The figures show how the design concentrated considerable speed and armament into a relatively compact hull.
