Escort production through capital-ship pauses

Britain paused some cruiser, battleship, and carrier work, but its 1938 escort program continued and could draw on a broad shipbuilding base even after France fell.

Notes

Some British carrier, cruiser, and battleship programs were paused, and restarting them added delays that could not be recovered immediately. Escort construction continued because the 1938 orders were already in production. The loss of French shipbuilding support narrowed the available base, but Britain retained many other yards. This continuity helps explain why corvettes and other convoy escorts could arrive in large numbers despite competing wartime demands.
